Nominal: general adult hourly rate in force on December 31 of each year (1965 is omitted because Alberta then had separate urban and non-urban rates). Real: nominal × CPI(2025) ÷ CPI(year), using Alberta's all-items CPI, annual average (Table 18-10-0005-01, https://doi.org/10.25318/1810000501-eng), which starts in 1979; year-end wages are deflated by annual-average prices.

Total hours actually worked in the year ÷ average number of people in employment (employees and self-employed). The OECD advises using these data to compare trends over time, not levels across countries, because national sources and methods differ. Rounded to whole hours, the OECD's published precision.

Annual averages, all industries, not adjusted for inflation. Statistics Canada cautions that 2006 changes to LFS processing introduced a level shift in average wages; compare across 2006 with care. The LFS recorded sex before 2022 and gender from 2022; Statistics Canada combines them in one series. From 2022 "Men" and "Women" are its Men+ and Women+ categories, each of which includes some non-binary persons. The Labour Force Survey covers the 10 provinces; it excludes the territories, people living on reserves, full-time members of the Canadian Armed Forces and people living in institutions.

Show the data and notes

Computed from the published annual average hourly wages of full-time employees (all industries). A raw ratio: it does not control for occupation, industry, experience, education or hours.

Household income divided by the square root of household size; 0 = everyone has the same income, 1 = one person has it all. Market income is before government transfers and taxes, total income adds transfers, after-tax income subtracts income taxes. Survey sources change over time: Survey of Consumer Finances (1976–1992), SCF and Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (1993–1997), SLID (1998–2011), Canadian Income Survey (2012 on); CIS methods changed from 2021 and 2018–2023 were revised with the 2021 Census. Household income counts the income of members aged 15 and over, except 16 and over in SLID years and CIS years before 2022. Canada excludes the territories before 2018.

Each year x covers July 1 of x to June 30 of x+1 (e.g. 2024 = 2024/2025). Rate = people who moved to another province or territory during the period ÷ Canada's population on July 1 at its start (Table 17-10-0005-01, https://doi.org/10.25318/1710000501-eng) × 1,000. For Canada as a whole, out-migrants equal in-migrants. The latest period is preliminary.

Annual averages of monthly Labour Force Survey estimates. The table has no 55–64 age group, so the 55–64 rate is computed here as (labour force aged 55–59 + 60–64) ÷ (population aged 55–59 + 60–64) × 100 from the same table's published levels; applied to groups StatCan does publish, this method reproduces its rates to within 0.1 point. The Labour Force Survey covers the 10 provinces; it excludes the territories, people living on reserves, full-time members of the Canadian Armed Forces and people living in institutions.

The Labour Force Survey publishes no annual table of wages by education, so this uses the 2021 Census. Restricting to people who worked 49 or more weeks in 2020, mostly full time (30+ hours a week), holds hours roughly constant, so the gaps approximate differences in pay rates. Employment income = wages, salaries and commissions plus net self-employment income; both genders. Pandemic benefits such as CERB are government transfers and are not included. This table does not split degrees above the bachelor's level.

Nominal: federal rate in force in December of each year (first set in October 1938) for workers covered by the original Fair Labor Standards Act; until 1978, groups brought in by the 1961 and 1966 amendments (and farm workers) had lower minimums. Real: nominal × CPI(2025) ÷ CPI(year), using annual-average CPI-U (CPIAUCNS, https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CPIAUCNS; the seasonally adjusted CPIAUCSL only starts in 1947). CPI averages with missing months: 2025 (11 months) — BLS did not collect October 2025 prices during the federal government shutdown and averages the remaining months, as here. Many states and cities set higher minimum wages.
